SPIRIT OF PLACE I
Thinking about a sense of place – the spirit of place – that I experienced near the lakes of my childhood in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. Being next to a quiet body of water, watching the changing colors of the sky, surrounded by gentle rolling hills and soft breeze.
In Celtic mythology the notion of a “thin place” in the universe is where the visible and the invisible world come into their closest proximity. Mountains, rivers and lakes are particularly favored as thin places – as are ancient and sacred locations.
The Spirit of Place offers a still point that stops the racing thoughts of our daily lives and turns us towards the transforming presence of the beauty of nature.
